Lavar Arrington

1997 – 1999

The Man

Fierce, athletic outside linebacker from North Hills High School in Pittsburgh, where he set records as a running back. He is a natural athlete who also excelled in basketball and track and field. While still in high school, Lavar got a Nittany Lion tattoo to pledge his commitment to Penn State. Lavar had a knack for the big play, and his athleticism and instincts made him an electrifying player to watch.

The Math

Senior year:

  • 72 tackles (20 for loss)
  • 9 sacks
  • 2 fumble recoveries (1 TD)
  • 2 blocked kicks
  • 2 All Big-Tens
  • 2 First-Team All-Americans

The Legend

Won the Bednarik, Butkus and Lambert Awards, but the legend was the Lavar Leap against Illinois. Arrington anticipated the snap count on fourth and short, jumped over the offensive line, and tackled the runner for a loss. A member of the “Mount Rushmore of Penn State Football”.

Life After State

Drafted #2 overall behind teammate Courtney Brown in the 2000 NFL draft by the Redskins, Arrington was selected to 3 Pro Bowls and was a 3-time second team All-Pro. Chronic knee injuries truncated his career, but he is still considered one of the 70 greatest Redskins.
