The Penn State baseball team will finish their regular season this weekend as the Arizona Wildcats come to University Park.
Penn State’s once-promising regular season is coming to an end. The Nittany Lions haven’t won a series since mid-March, against UMass Lowell. It will be hard to change that now. This weekend, the Nittany Lions take on the Pac-12’s Arizona Wildcats.
Arizona will come to University Park with a 26-24 record overall including a 14-10 record in non-conference play. The Wildcats have also been hot as of late, winning seven of their last 10 games. The Lions, on the other hand, enter the series with a 22-24 overall record and are entering the final weekend of the regular season on a two-game winning streak.
The first game of the series is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday with games two and three being played on Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) respectively.
While Arizona has been playing its best baseball at the right time of the season, the Nittany Lions have struggled much like they have since their 13-3 start. In their last 10 games, the Nittany Lions are 4-6. The good news heading into their series against the Wildcats, however, is that they’re 18-6 in non-conference play.
Last weekend, the Nittany took on the Ohio State Buckeyes and lost the first two games of the series before claiming game three. On Tuesday, they took on Mount St.Mary’s, at one point falling behind the Mountaineers 6-1. The Nittany Lions would score seven unanswered runs though in en route to an 8-6 victory.
It’s without a doubt been a tough season for the program since their 13-3 start. Since then, the program has gone 13-21. A series win this weekend, however, could give the season a feeling of some type of success. Taking two out of three would give them a 24-25 record, while a series sweep would allow the Lions to finish at 25-25. It’s not the season that the program expected after their great start but it’s the best they can hope for at this point.
