Sean Clifford is going to make this tough on James Franklin

The 2019 Blue-White Game is in the rear view mirror, and the players will get a break between now and summer camp in early August.

The coaches, however, are going to have some sleepless nights.

That’s due in large part to the performance of redshirt sophomore quarterback Sean Clifford .

Clifford looked good in the annual spring game, going 11-of-19 for 118 yards and a touchdown through the air, while also scrambling for solid yardage when the opportunities presented themselves. All told, the sophomore recorded 33 yards on six carries, good for 5.5 yards per carry.

Sean’s stats were adversely affected by a couple drops, including one each by Pat Freiermuth and KJ Hamler . The receivers settled in however, and the blue offense looked solid, if very vanilla.

Perhaps even more concerning is the fact that Tommy Stevens , plagued by injuries throughout his career, was held out of the spring scrimmage completely as he recovers from a foot surgery he underwent prior to the Citrus Bowl.

While Tommy has been named the front runner, expect a full on quarterback competition as the team enters fall camp.

Even if Stevens wins the starting gig, his history with injuries could lead one to think that he may end up missing time in the 2019 season here or there.

And if Clifford comes in and lights it up? Well, let’s just say that James Franklin makes the big bucks for a reason.
